![]() TL DR: Consider the cost of additional software needed when looking at deals and don't worry too much about hardware dust removal. I still use it, but if I would be shopping for a scanner again, I wouldn't put as much of an emphasis on this feature. The cd I got with mine has Silverfast 6.2, I don't know what Windows versions it supports. ![]() (See below.) I don't know about the Silverfast license. If youre using Windows and youve installed a Plustek driver, VueScans. This means there is no plug and play for these scanners without additional software. VueScan is compatible with the Plustek OpticFilm 7400 on Windows, macOS and Linux. Sure, it won't take as long as it would without IR dust removal, but you also have to remember that the IR scan adds an extra pass to the scanning process, which also adds a significant amount of time at 3600dpi. Plustek doesn't provide drivers for the 7200 for Windows 10, only for Windows 7 and older. ![]() I somehow thought there would be almost no more need for manual editing of dust and scratches, but you really have to dial it down if you don't want any artifacts, so you will still be editing by hand. If the 7200 and the 8100 really are exactly the same hardware wise (I know that's true for the 7600i and the 8200i) and it is still a good deal even if you have to get the software: Go for it! RE the dust issue: I own one of the i models, and it is important to set your expectations realistically when it comes to IR dust removal. Film scanning software doesn't come cheap, unfortunately, it can be just as expensive (or even more expensive) as the scanner itself. As someone else has mentioned, Silverfast 6.x does not work with Win 10/11, so you need to factor in the cost of a newer version for SF or a Vuescan license when deciding whether the deal is worth it.
